Tsechu is the most celebrated festivals in Bhutan. It lasts from 3-5 days. One of the many auspicious event of Tsechu is the unfurling of the Thongdrol which translates to liberation on sight. It is believed that bad karmas are expiated simply by viewing it. Apart from its religious implications, the Tshechu is also an annual social gathering. Since most monastries stage their own Tshechu at different times of the year, most tourists flock to the larger of these events such as Paro and Thimphu Tshechu.
